2012 Outside The Ring Award
The Arnold USA Amateur Boxing Invitational Championships also presents the Outside the Ring Award to an individual recognized for their ongoing contributions to the sport of boxing both in and outside the ring. Past recipients include: Frank Shamrock, Joe Frazier, James “Buster” Douglas, Jerry Page, Vonzell Johnson, Johnny Davis, Jr. and Mike Johnson and karate and boxing legend Troy Dorsey.
Roy Jones, Jr. a six-time world champion who held world titles in the middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions, will receive the Outside The Ring Award in 2012. He is the only boxer in history to begin his career as a light middleweight and go on to win a heavyweight title.
Early on Jones’ father, Roy Jones Sr., ran his own boxing gym where he trained many youth fighters including his son. He was very tough on his son, often driving him to exhaustion. Jr. said in a Sports Illustrated article “I spent all my life in my dad's cage. I could never be 100 percent of who I am until I left it. But because of him, nothing bothers me. I'll never face anything stronger and harder than what I already have.”
Jones is known for his incredible speed and punching power. Former heavyweight champion George Foreman said Jones Jr. “hits like a heavyweight and moves like a lightweight.”
From 1993-1997 Roy Jones Jr. has won numerous awards including Fighter of the Year; Man of the Year; Sportsman of the Year, Fighter of Unlimited Potential, an ESPY, Boxer of the Decade, Best Pound-for-Pound Fighter in the World and Best Fighter in the World.
