Sports Photo Workshop

Learn how to shoot better sports action, features and portraits from professional photographers

A one-day workshop on Saturday, March 6, 2010, during the Arnold Sports Festival at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

David Tejada
David Tejada

The workshop features David Tejada, a Denver-based professional photographer whose Small Strobes - Big Results lighting seminar instructs photographers how simple lighting techniques with inexpensive equipment can make better photos.

This is a rare opportunity for photographers to receive instruction from one of the best lighting technicians in the world. David is praised for his teaching technique and the value of his insights. Other sessions include:

  • Gettin g your Priorities Straight: How to better understand the automatic functions of your digital camera. Which setting is best and which one should you choose?

  • Missing The Action: How to overcome shutter lag so that slide at second isn't another out.

  • I Don't Want To Spend That Much: Go shopping for a new camera that won't break the bank but let you shoot photos like Sports Illustrated.

  • From the Refrigerator Do or to the Web Site: Online storage, in-house storage, or gone forever? What do you do with all these digital images?

A Working Photo Studio

The workshop will also have a live studio where you can watch Arnold Sports Festival photographers shoot portraits of athletes and fans from the weekend. You'll be able to see all the techniques required to shoot hundreds of athletes. Watch how the photographers determine lighting for each athlete and how they work to make the subject comfortable during the session. You'll also get to watch as the resulting images are processed for long-term storage and display on the Arnold Sports Festival Web site.

Attend the Photo Show At The EXPO, where the latest in digital cameras and portable lighting equipment will be available in a day-long, hands-on demonstration of cameras, lenses and lighting for all photographers.

Our Staff

Gary Gardiner is a former Associated Press staff photographer and photo editor who's photographed the Arnold Classic and Arnold Sports Festival for more than 20 years and been its primary photographer since 1994.

Jay LaPrete is an Ohio-based professional freelance photographer contracted to AP, USAToday, and European Press Photo Agency. His recent works includes the NHL Stanley Cup finals, NBA and NFL Playoffs, World Cup Soccer, NASCAR races, the Olympics, and numerous national championships for NCAA football, hockey, soccer and volleyball.

Ron Schwane often finds himself focused on second base at Cleveland Indians games or the corner end zone marker at the Browns. Based in Medina, Ron is a founding member of Ohio Sports Shooters where he covers sports for clients and families.

Chris Putman follows speed wherever that leads him. From Daytona for cars and motorcycles to Ohio Stadium for the Buckeyes, Chris continues to shoot sports in a unique way. We'll also have Ohio-based newspaper photographers who are excellent sports photographers to share their techniques and talents.
