To Award College Scholarships To Young Athletes
The Arnold Sports Festival in partnership with the Columbus Rotary will provide eight $2,000 college scholarships to youth participants at the 2012 Arnold Sports Festival.
The Arnold Sports Festival and Columbus Rotary have granted more than $88,000 worth of college scholarships since the program began in 2006. Ten scholarships worth $20,000 were awarded in 2011.
The scholarships are awarded each year during the Arnold Sports Festival by Weekend producer Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and a Columbus Rotarian.
Scholarships will be presented to youth athletes in the following sports in 2012: fencing, cheerleading, weightlifting, gymnastics (two), martial arts, boxing and track & field.
“Columbus Rotary is delighted to partner every year with the Arnold Sports Festival in recognizing academic and athletic excellence,” said Steve Sundre, Columbus Rotary scholarship committee chair. “Since inception, the Arnold Sports Festival has steadily increased its commitment to promising student athletes who strengthen their communities through service and seek opportunities to pursue a college education."
Jim Lorimer, co-producer of the Arnold Sports Festival, commented, “Arnold and I originally conceived of The Arnold Sports Festival as an opportunity to celebrate excellence through sports performance. We value our partnership with the Columbus Rotary, and our joint commitment to youth demonstrated through these important scholarships.”
Scott Brown, executive director of Columbus Rotary adds, “The Arnold Sports Festival brings attendees from all over the world to Columbus. As a worldwide service organization, it is natural that Columbus Rotary welcomes these visitors to our community. We are also pleased to be able to recognize scholar athletes for their accomplishments through our scholarship awards.”
