A watercolor portrait of martial arts competitors won first place in the Eighth Annual Art at the Arnold competition at the Arnold Sports Festival. Artists portrayed athletes and sports action the first weekend in March at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
The first place winner was Fran Mangino of Venice, Fla. Other winners were: 2nd place, John Catania of Delaware, Ohio who did a duck tape composition and 3rd place, Laura Wolery of Powell, Ohio with a painting of ballroom dancers. Honorable mentions went to Dennis Parrish of Lexington, Ky. and Jarrod Erik of Columbus, Ohio.
The president of Columbus College of Art and Design, Dr. Melanie Corn served as judge for the competition.
The three-day competition consisted of a half day of figure drawing and painting of athlete models including DanceSport, Amateur Strongman and Gymnastics. In the afternoon the artists sketched and gathered reference material throughout the Arnold Sports Festival. The second day artists did studio work using material gathered the day before. The final day artists selected one piece to submit for judging.
New this year was a Quick Draw Contest with artists drawing a model from 20 minute poses. Jarrod Erik won first place and Sean Wang won 2nd place.
“Save the Date: March 2-4, 2018 for the next Art At The Arnold. Watch for information and deadlines for next year’s competition as space will again be limited,” said event director, Kevin Buckland.
