Art at the Arnold
The 10th Art at the Arnold competition at the Arnold Sports Festival was held March 1-3, 2019 with artists portraying athletes and sports action at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
First-place went to Maurice Wingfield of Columbus, Ohio, for his pen and ink drawing of two fitness models. Other winners were: second-place, David Belgrad who did a charcoal drawing of the Art At The Arnold event in action and third-place was Nora Sallows of Ingalls, Ind., for her oil painting of the female model by the motorcycle.
Honorable mentions went to Duane King of Indianapolis for his clay sculpture of a female gymnast and Fran Mangino of Venice, Fla., for her watercolor of a weightlifter.
The judge for the 2019 Art At The Arnold competition was Ron Anderson of Columbus, Ohio; an oil painter and educator. His artwork features contemporary paintings of landscapes, portraits and figurative art.
The three-day competition consisted of a half day of figure drawing and painting of fitness athlete models along side a motorcycle supplied by Iron Pony Motorsports of Westerville, Ohio. In the afternoon the artists sketched and gathered reference material throughout the Arnold Sports Festival. The second day artists did all day work session using material gathered the day before. The final day artists selected one piece to submit for judging and an art show followed the judge’s presentation.
